This 24-year-old now knows what its like to be a human pin cushion. The builder was so close to an industrial explosion that his leg ended up being impaled by 13 long steel rods. Emergency services in China swung in to action and surgeons were able to painstakingly remove each one before releasing an astonishing video of the procedure. Wang Tao, 24, was rushed to the Xijing Hospital emergency room after an explosion in the concrete processing plant he works at. He was hit by the 13 steel rods which penetrated his right hip and pelvic cavity and he was bleeding profusely. His colleagues had had to cut some of the steel rods to be able to move him to the hospital because they were simply too long to get both them and the patient out of the building. Before operating on him, the doctors were concerned about damage to major arteries and injuries to body organs, blood vessels and bone. After a CT scan they saw there were incredibly no major vascular injuries, so two hours later started an operation to remove the twisted rods. It took another four hours before the steel rods were was successfully removed. The longest steel rod was 81 cm. Mr Wang is now in stable condition in a Xijing Hospital, intensive care unit. Able to talk, he joked: My boss said it's just a minor injury.
