• Dog Adopts Orphaned Opossums, Takes Them For Rides On Her Back

Last month, tragedy struck a group of helpless baby opossums when, sadly, their mother was attacked and killed on a property in Brazil. Fortunately, someone discovered the orphaned offspring, their eyes still not yet open, and gave them to pet behaviorist Stephanie Maldonado for safekeeping. Initially, Maldonado had hoped to take the baby opossums to a nearby wildlife rescue group, but was told that they were too full to accept any newcomers. So, she took it upon herself to keep them cozy and fed. The animals required feeding every two hours, but it was still uncertain if the opossums would survive without more motherly attention than Maldonado could provide.

That's when her dog, Pretinha, stepped in.
The sweet-natured pup apparently sensed the little opossums were in need, and began doting upon them as if they were her own.

"It's very nice to see all the care that she has with them, licking them all the time and nestling them," Maldonado Pretinha clearly enjoys her new maternal calling. Perhaps most incredibly though, the dog is more than happy to embrace her adopted litter's un-puppylike instinct to climb atop their mom. In fact, Pretinha seems to enjoy that part too. The dog is so accepting of letting the opossum orphans climb on her that she even takes them on rides during her walks, just like a real opossum mother.
• Baby who was stabbed, buried alive by mother adopted by Swedish couple

The baby boy “Aidin” who was cruelly stabbed at least 14 times and found buried alive in a field in Khon Kaen province back in February will start his bright future in the family of a Swedish couple.
The baby, now seven months old, will soon be adopted by a Swedish couple after being in the care of Kaen Thong Orphanage since he was abandoned by his mother earlier this year, according to Supachai Pathimchart, a staff member at the orphanage.
Supachai said the Department of Children and Youth usually runs a background check on couples who wishe to adopt a baby. Some of the criteria taken into consideration include their mental health, criminal records, and their capability to care for the baby, Khaosod reported.
On Feb. 23, a cattle raiser rescued the baby after she saw his foot emerging from the soil under a eucalyptus tree in Wang Yai district. The child was immediately sent to Khon Kaen Provincial Hospital and was named "Aidin" or "earth smell” by the hospital staff.
The doctor said it was the earth that helped stop the bleeding from the baby's stab wounds.
Aidin’s mother, who was only identified as a 42-year-old woman, was later tracked down and charged for attempted murder and abandoning her own child.
• Orphaned Baboon Is So Relieved To Meet Her Adoptive Mum

After a mother baboon was killed for bushmeat, her little daughter was left all alone — and was likely going to be raised for meat herself.

But everything changed when the baby, now named Missa, was discovered by park rangers in Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The baby was in the hands of a poacher, who has since been arrested and charged for killing animals like Missa's mom.

The babies her mother was killed for bushmeat and she was probably going to be raised and used for bushmeat herself," Itsaso Vélez del Burgo Guinea, technical director of Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL),

People were so determined to save this traumatized baby baboon, that a pilot from the national park flew her to CRPL's rehabilitation center, where she'd be able to regain her strength. With the help of Africa Parks rangers, she was able to ride in the helicopter with a tourist who was coming to CRPL for a visit. Sadly, the bushmeat trade in Africa kills thousands of primates like Missa and her mum each year, devastating families and destabilizing whole ecosystems. When Missa arrived, it was clear the trauma of her plight had left its mark on her. So rescuers decided to introduce her to someone who could relate.

An older Baboon named Grace, who was rescued from a hotel where she was kept all alone in a small cage, also calls CRPL home. When Missa met Grace, the bond was instantaneous. And Missa, newly orphaned, was clearly relieved to see someone who reminded her of her mum. "Two dramatic and sad lives are now united," Itsaso said.
People were so determined to save this traumatized baby baboon, that a pilot from the national park flew her to CRPL's rehabilitation center, where she'd be able to regain her strength. • Handicapped Cat cant find a new home

A loveable handicapped cat is bunking down at the MSPCA-Angell in Boston and staffers are hoping to identify one special adopter to bring him home, the organization announced today.

Ten-month-old “Ivan” was born without radial bones in his front legs and is also missing two toes on each front paw. His left hind leg is also deformed, making it impossible for him to walk normally.

Despite living in the adoption center for two weeks after his previous owner surrendered him, no one has shown interest in the green-eyed charmer.

MSPCA-Angell adoption center manager Alyssa Krieger believes Ivan is just as deserving as any other cat, however. “What Ivan lacks in mobility he more than makes up for in personality,” she said of the cat who loves to be held and petted.

Krieger hopes Ivan’s story will inspire an individual or family to come by the adoption center to meet him in person during open hours. “His physical limitations will always be there—so we’re looking for the adopter who can see through that and give him the second chance he deserves,” said Krieger.

Rare Deformity
Compounding Ivan’s physical challenges is his tendency to not use the litterbox each and every time. Would-be adopters will need to arrange their home around his needs, which include hard surfaces that can be cleaned easily but also runners and carpets so that he can “army crawl” his way about, as moving across hard surfaces is difficult for him.
Anyone interested in adopted Ivan can contact the MSPCA’s Boston
Blind Couple Adopt Blind Children

RAISING two kids is hard enough – but imagine if both parents are blind…and they adopt two blind children.
Paula and Alan Sprecher did – and say it's the best decision they've ever made!
“We face challenges all day long – but we always find ways to overcome them,” said loving mum Paula, 49, a teacher for the visually impaired.
“Alan and I have been legally blind since birth, so we know how to teach our kids survival skills that make them confident and independent young people.
“All four of us are lucky. We feel blessed!”
Paula and Alan were married for 21 years before a chance encounter with two nuns collecting money for overseas orphanages led them to Rupa, then seven years old and living in an orphan in Bangalore, India.
“Adoption officials told us that all the little girl dreamed of was having a mom and dad,” said Paula.
“Her favorite childhood game was to play like she was talking to her mother and father.”
Despite initial doubts about parenthood – do we have enough to offer a child? – the couple could not resist adopting the little girl who loves dolls, frilly dresses and bangles. That was in 2008.
Then they found Aihua, four years younger, in China. She's a tomboy who loves blocks and puzzles and sleeps with a yellow toy Jeep.
Now they live in a two-story brick house in Chicago where the microwave buttons are marked with Braille, the clocks announce the time and everyone listens for the school bus at 7.15 a.m.
“We grew up without sight,” said Paula. “It's normal to us. We knew there were kids out there who were probably abandoned because they were blind and we wanted to provide a home for them – children we knew we could help.”
The Sprechers teach their girls how to ride the bus (listen carefully for each stop), how to identify coins by size and weight (“This is a dime!” Aihua says correctly), how to sort the laundry (pin your sock

 • Mar 01, 2006 - Malawian, South Africa - EXCLUSIVE - 'Madonna's Rocco row is nothing compared to the battle she will face with Mercy': Star must talk to family of Malawi 'orphan' she adopted or face serious rift, warns best friend of girl's REAL mother

Reconciled with her son Rocco after months of separation and bitter words, Madonna returned to New York with fresh hope that her family will be once more re-united.
But as lawyers attempt to work out a mutual custody agreement, she has been sent a warning that she could face a far greater battle in the future.
A battle for the heart and mind of her adopted Malawian daughter Mercy James, whose natural family believe they were hoodwinked into agreeing the adoption and who want her back.

Twenty-five-year-old Agatha Molande claims that the controversial adoption will prove a never-ending saga as 10-year-old Mercy uncovers the true history of her birth.
'The Mercy situation is potentially a bigger problem than the custody battle [over Rocco],' she said.
'Madonna may have been acting in good faith believing she was saving a child from poverty and death, as she may not have been told the whole truth.
'It is difficult to put into words the love Mercy's Malawian family have for her.

'They love her so much and never intended to be permanently separated from her.
'For them it is a battle they will not stop fighting. Madonna needs to understand that as Mercy grows older and becomes aware of these things it may not be good for her and all parties concerned.'
The adoption of Mercy in 2009 led to heartbreaking scenes within her family as a deal was struck to hand the child over, amid, allegedly, broken promises of visitation rights and her eventual return - something that Madonna has strongly denied.
The family say they have lost contact with Mercy since the adoption.
But in a war of words with the family, a spokesperson for the 57-year-old superstar said: 'Mercy has never had her past or her heritage hidden from her and she visit

• Critically Ill “Puppy Mill” Dog on the Mend after Surgery

MSPCA-Angell Surgeons and Adoption Center Staff Team up to Give “Nelson” a Second Chance

BOSTON, Dec. 11, 2015 – An adorable nine-week-old puppy who was bought online and shipped from Missouri to Massachusetts by truck arrived in the state so ill he required emergency veterinary intervention at the MSPCA-Angell, the organization announced today. Now the pup—named “Nelson”—is on the mend and will be placed for adoption after he recovers.

The Shar Pei-Pug was brought by his former owner to the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center on Monday, Dec. 7 suffering from lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Nelson had been in Massachusetts for only a week, having endured the 20-hour trip from Missouri in a small cage to reach the state.

Emergency Surgery
As it turned out Nelson’s intestines were entangled and Angell surgeons had to remove a large portion, re-positon and re-insert them into his tiny abdomen.

Alyssa Krieger, manager of the MSPCA’s animal care and adoption center, settled the puppy into the shelter after the owner surrendered him. “Thankfully Nelson arrived in our care just in time as he would have died without emergency surgery, which would have been doubly tragic given everything he’d already endured.

Nelson will be placed in foster care for two weeks, to continue recovering from surgery before he can be placed into a new home.

Puppy Buyers Beware
Nelson’s plight focuses a spotlight on the dangers of “online only” pet sales, in which buyers are not able to visit the breeder to inspect conditions or meet dogs before purchasing. “This was a classic puppy mill situation and it’s not surprising to us that Nelson was so sick—he was likely critically ill before he was even transported to Massachusetts,” said Krieger.
“We encourage everyone to please adopt vs. buying a new pet—but at the very least buyers should be able to inspect a breeder’s pr

How A Dog Shelter Became A Talent Agency

In general, people tend to have a negative opinion about dog shelters, for various reasons. When it comes to getting a dog, they usually prefer a purebred breeder or a pet store instead of adopting one. This leads to overcrowded shelters, which are constantly fighting for funding.
Knowing they can’t rely on people’s voluntary donations alone, K9Friends decided to let their most important assets earn these donations in style, by starring in commercials. The Dubai-based dog shelter became a canine talent agency, where each dog available for casting has its own professional look book, Andrei Daniluc from the shelter said "So far they have been picked for print ads. They appeared in Viva Magazine, posed for Freedom Pizza posters, Pets Delight dog food, etc. But the campaign aimed to bring visibility to the shelter. You can foster a dog for a couple of weeks, take it for the weekend so they are like a part time companion you can benefit from in exchange for a donation. People can also adopt, of course, which was our ultimate goal :) So most of these dogs are already part of loving families."
• Puppy on the Mend after Front Legs are Crushed by Falling Brick

“Bruno” Recovering from Major Surgery while MSPCA-Angell Evaluates Adoptive Homes

One-year-old puppy “Bruno” is on the mend after major surgery to repair his front legs which—according to his previous owner—were fractured when a brick fell on him,

Bruno was brought to Angell Animal Medical Center and surrendered by his owners because of the burden associated with rehabilitating the critically injured dog.

Dr. Zach Crouse of Angell’s Emergency & Critical Care Unit was first to evaluate Bruno and was shocked by what he saw. “This dog’s legs were very obviously and very badly fractured,” he said. “Not only could he not bear weight, but his two front limbs were completely limp. And he was in severe pain.”

Pain medicine was administered to help calm the frightened puppy. Dr. Crouse ordered x-rays which confirmed the fractures—both severe enough that surgery would be required. Angell surgeons Andrew Goodman and Matthew Cleveland inserted plates and screws to bind Bruno’s leg bones and he was fitted with casts on both legs.

The Search for the Perfect Home
Bruno is recovering from surgery but will not be ready for adoption for at least six more weeks. He is currently in foster care in the home of Andrea Bessler, veterinary technician at the MSPCA’s Shalit-Glazer clinic in Boston, which is adjacent to the adoption center and meets the medical care needs of the thousands of homeless animals treated and placed into new homes by the MSPCA every year.

According to Bessler, Bruno is not letting his injury hold him back. “Of the many dogs and other animals I’ve fostered while they recover from injury or illness, Bruno is one of the most playful, charming and all-around most socialized,” she said. “He gets along perfectly with my other pets and my children and I’m sure that after he’s completely healed he’s going to make one very lucky adopter feel very sp

People can also adopt, of course, which was our ultimate goal :) So most of these dogs are already part of loving families."

 • Bubbles the Cross-eyed cat

A cross-eyed feral cat was a complete mess when she arrived at Tabby's Place, a sanctuary and rescue for cats in New Jersey.

Not only was this particular feral cat starving and kind of odd looking, because her pupils were too close to her nose — she was also kind of nasty.

"She hid in the corner and when you tried to touch her she would scratch you," Leigh Covello, a volunteer with Tabby's Place and an experienced veterinary technician, Indeed, it seemed unlikely that anyone would ever be able to truly love this misfit cat.

But the cat — who is roughly 3 years old and who came to be called Bubbles — had good reason to be defensive. In her colony of feral cats, she was the underdog. The other cats picked on her and hardly let her eat when good Samaritans dropped off food for the colony.

It's possible Bubbles was also disoriented because of irregularities in her vision, so she would lash out. Bubbles slowly grew accustomed to life at the sanctuary, but she still wouldn't let people get near her.

She befriended a cat named Reggie. But then Reggie got adopted, and once again Bubbles was alone. She was obviously depressed, according to Covello. So, Covello, who saw something special in the cross-eyed cat, decided that perhaps Bubbles would benefit from a change of scene.

Even though Covello had never managed to even touch Bubbles, she decided to temporarily take her home.

"I thought she had potential to be an adoptable cat," Covello explained. "So we got approved to foster her." Covello brought Bubbles home and kept her in a separate room, apart from the other cats of the house, while she adjusted.

"I was afraid we'd never see her," Covello remembered. But the Covello family all pitched in to help Bubbles feel comfortable. "We spent a lot of time sitting in the room with her and talking to her." Soon it became clear that Bubbles wasn't about to go anywhere. And the Covello family officially and happily adopted her.
• Rescue Dog Becomes 'Mum' To Every Animal She Meets

When the rabbit escaped from her hutch, Meylin Hadad panicked. The neighbors had a dog, and if the rabbit got into their yard, Hadad worried it would be the end of her.

Hadad screamed for her daughter to come help her catch the rabbit. Hadad's own dog — a Great Dane named Missy — came bounding over and chased the rabbit down. Hadad feared the worst.

"I'm like, OK, that's it," says Hadad "But when I got there, nothing had happened. She had grabbed the rabbit, but she was just holding her on the ground with her mouth. Her teeth weren't even touching her. And when I picked up the rabbit, she started licking her. After that, I'm like, OK — this dog will never hurt anything."

Before Missy was Hadad's dog, she'd been owned by one of Hadad's acquaintances. The first owners decided they didn't want Missy anymore, so Hadad adopted her in 2012.

"They got Missy when she was a newborn," Hadad explains. "They weren't too familiar with the breed. They didn't realize how big she was getting, so at 6 months, they didn't have the space for her, and they didn't want to take care of her."

Missy isn't the only animal Hadad has rescued. She has a mini animal sanctuary at her home in Broward County in South Florida, with rescued dogs, cats, horses, goats, chickens, birds and a porcupine. Today, Missy is in her element at Hadad's home. She adores all the animals, Hadad says, treating them like her own children.

"She just immediately wants to play with everybody," Hadad says. "Any new animal that I've brought in, she wants to nurture and take on the mommy role."

Last October, Hadad adopted Gordo, a piglet found running down a sidewalk in Miami. Hadad's friend grabbed the piglet before a car hit him, and Hadad offered to adopted him. The moment Gordo met Missy, he was obsessed with her, Hadad says. "That pig went directly to the dog," Hadad says. "Obviously the first time they met, I held Missy on a rope, just being cautious.

Pukka up! A kiss for the son who made Jamie Oliver’s family complete

It was the one missing ingredient in his recipe for the perfect family.
Jamie Oliver introduced his long-awaited son to the world with a tender kiss... or what the TV chef might have called a pukka pucker.
Buddy Bear Maurice Oliver (might he become known as Buddy Oli?), arrived on Wednesday evening in what mother Jools described as a 'hard and fast labour', which lasted two and a half hours.
The couple already have three daughters, living in what Jamie has referred to as a ‘totally oestrogen-filled house’.
As he stood outside Portland Hospital, Central London, with Poppy Honey, eight, Daisy Boo, seven, and 18-month-old Petal Blossom Rainbow, his joy at finally having a boy overflowed.
'It’s wonderful. I didn’t think I had it in me,' he said
When asked what inspired the name Oliver, 5, pointed to his wife.
Shrugging her shoulders Mrs Oliver, also 5, said: 'I just like the name Buddy, I thought it was sweet.'
The Maurice is in honour of her father, who died in 1997 after a stroke.
Oliver said: 'I never thought for a moment I would have a boy. All you can ever dream of is having a healthy child and that’s the best thing in the world.
'In a way it would have been easier to have had a girl. We’re not prepared for a boy – there’s no blue in the house.'
Dressed in jeans and ballet pumps, Mrs Oliver looked happy but exhausted.
Her husband announced Buddy Bear’s arrival on his Twitter page declaring: 'It’s a baby boy guys!!! We’re all very happy, mum was amazing and both are well and happy.'
Earlier in the year, he said if they weren’t able to have a boy he might adopt.
'I would consider it. We have three beautiful, healthy girls and we cherish them. But I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be great to have a boy.
'Adoption is such a selfless act. It’s humbling and beautiful to see.'
