• Cotopaxi Volcanic Activity Threatens Ecolodge

Activity on the Cotopaxi volcano is threatens to close down family run Ecolodges and upset ecotourism in Ecuador. Although the last real eruption was one hundred years ago, the activity is increasing on a daily basis and the government has decided to decree a state of emergency. Even if Cotopaxi doesn’t erupt, the activity has already done a lot of harm to tourism in the area. Jascivan Carvalho from DestinationEcuador.com operates the Chilcabamba ecolodge that lies in the shadow of the volcano and was interviewed for this article.

Q: What implications does the eruption have for tourism in Ecuador? What effect is this having on your lodge?

A: The worst case scenario is that an eruption could destroy the entire lodge and highways could be destroyed, access to the airport could be cut off. Also 300,000 people could be displaced causing a refugee crisis.

Our lodge is located very close to the Volcano and would probably be the second one to be destroyed if the volcano erupted.

Right now the volcanic activity has completely closed our lodge since last Friday when the first eruption happened. Ash fell on the lodge and we could smell the sulfur gas. Since then the ash has been blowing a different direction. We haven’t reopened for overnight stays because the government has declared a Yellow Alert and is working to put in an evacuation plan in place.

Right now we are loosing tons of money because we have to pay the salaries to our staff etc. and half of the tourists have canceled their trips. We are forecasting that Ecuador will loose a lot of tourist income due to the bad news about the volcano even after the volcano is dormant again.

Since the ash has gone away we are opening the lodge for lunch and allowing photographers to take photos of the eruption. Chilcabamba Lodge is an incredible viewpoint for the Volcano and probably the best place in Ecuador to see the activity. Our restaurant and cafeteria are open fo
