• Landmines afghanistan
Exclusive Text and photos: Ton Koene/Exclusivepix Media

Afghanistan is one big minefield. An estimated 10 million mines are spread over the country. Grazing lands, waterways, schools, paths, villages and cities are infested with mainly Anti-personal mines. Landmines were predominantly placed during the civil war in the nineties when Russia fought the Mujehadien freedom fighters. Mine clearance teams in Afghanistan report finding literally dozens of types of landmines, mainly from the ex-USSR, but also from Belgium, Italy, US and the UK. The most infamous mine used during the Soviet Union's occupation period was the so-called 'butterfly' mine. Helicopter crews dropped untold numbers (figures range into the millions) of the small mines from the air. They were designed to flutter to the ground without exploding, and to thousands of children they resembled butterflys or toys. Several demining organisations are working in various places inside Afghanistan but demining is a very slow process. It takes weeks to clear a small piece of land as deminers go inch by inch. Despite the international efforts to demine parts of Afghanistan, it will take another few hundred years to make Afghanistan mine free, at the speed it is going right now. Every day, dozens of civilians across Afghanistan, often children step on landmines and loose limbs or even die. In Afghanistan, accurate and exhaustive figures of the disabled population are not available. Those with mobility impairments could be around one million, of whom approximately 50,000 to 100,000 are limb amputees and their number is constantly increasing. ICRC is the main organization dealing with these victims. Not only providing emergency assistance to mine victims in hospitals, but also to support these victims during recovery in the ICRC physical rehabilitation center in Kabul. Here victims receive prostheses and extensive physical rehabilitation. After months of rehab, most of them are able to find the

 • Monte Kali: A Mountain of Table Salt

Monte Kali is an unusual landmark in the small town of Heringer in eastern Hesse, Germany. It’s a spoil heap containing nothing but sodium chloride or common table salt, which is a byproduct of potash mining. For over a hundred years, potash mining has been a major industry in the region. It started with the opening of Wintershall potash works, which began mining in 1903, and today is the world’s biggest potash mine with an operational area about the size of Greater Munich’s.

Potash mining produces a mixture of potash and sodium chloride, with potassium content between 20% and 35%. Thus, for every ton of potash recovered, several tons of sodium chloride is produced. This is dumped at several sites around the region. The dumps contain up to 96% sodium chloride.
Monte Kali began growing in 1973, and it’s where the K+S chemical company dumps sodium chloride. The heap rises over 200 meters above the surrounding land, and as of January 2014, covered an area of 93 hectares. It contains as approximately 188 million tonnes of salt, with another 900 tonnes being added every hour and 6.4 million tonnes a year.

Lying next to the border with the state of Thuringia, Monte Kali towers over Heringen and is a popular attraction. Locals refer to it as “Kalimanjaro” — a play of words between Kali (shorthand for Kalisalz, German for "potash") and the famous volcanic peak Mount Kilimanjaro. More than 10,000 visitors climb the artificial mountain every year.

But Monte Kali and other spoil heaps in the region are environmentally destructive. An enormous amount of salt seeps into the ground polluting the soil, rivers and groundwater. The surrounding soil has become virtually barren and only a few halophyte plants resistant to salt can grow there. The Werra river too has become inhospitable to freshwater organisms.
• Unusual Friendship Between Wolf And Bear

an amazing event occurred involving a male bear cub and a female wolf cub. The shy bear cub tended to avoid the other bears and to feed alone. If larger individuals appeared, the young cub would quietly depart.
This scenario continued for several nights. Then a light coloured female wolf cub joined the young bear. She, too, kept herself to herself, avoiding conflict. I called them Romeo and Juliet. Romeo’s behaviour emboldened Juliet. Romeo sat at a funny attitude at the dinner table and appeared inquisitive but friendly when Juliet guardedly crept up to the same table. From her attitude it was obvious that Juliet was prepared to flee immediately if Romeo disliked her. Tail between her legs and her entire body tensed, the wolf cub finally summoned up the courage to eat off the same plate as the little bear.
In the realm of the bears I had never before seen an individual which did not in one way or another behave threateningly towards a wolf, if not by actually charging, at least by emitting that characteristic smacking together of the jaws or a low-pitched warning growl.
Had the two been members of the same species one would have surmised that deeper feelings were at work. But a wolf and a bear - huh! In fact, their friendship actually grew night by night. Romeo would appear first. Not long afterwards Juliet’s pale form could be discerned in the forest. As soon as it became evident that no other bears or wolves were feasting, she would join her friend. At its best the distance between the two heads as the animals sank their teeth into the food was a mere 30-40 cm.
This unusual love affair lasted for well over a week before the animals went their separate ways. Later, I saw Romeo several times but he was always alone. Juliet, on the other hand, could be seen hanging out with her relatives. It is highly characteristic of wolf behaviour for the pack to disperse, only to gather again in a variety of compositions – eve

It is highly characteristic of wolf behaviour for the pack to disperse, only to gather again in a variety of compositions – eve

an amazing event occurred involving a male bear cub and a female wolf cub.
As the populations of the world's major cities continue to grow, accommodation will become an increasingly sought-after commodity.
Now designers in China, which itself has more than one billion inhabitants, have have come up with a potential solution.
It's a mobile home called the Tricycle House that has been created for people who cannot afford their own home. It is equipped with an integrated water tank, bath tub and a stove.
The bed transforms into a dining table or a bench to make the interior versatile and suitable for any occasions.
Modular design allows for expansion and interconnection between units.

The until itself is made of translucent plastic which lets in natural light during the day and the glow from street lamps at night.
The house is fitted onto the frame of a tricycle and so can be taken just about anywhere.
It has been created by the People's Industrial Design and People's Architecture Office based in the Chinese capital of Beijing.
The Tricycle House was made for the 2012 Get It Louder Exhibition in Beijing.
A spokesman explained: 'Private ownership of land in China does not exist.
'The Tricycle House suggests a future embrace of the temporary relationship between people and the land they occupy.
'In a crowded Chinese city single family homes can be affordable and sustainable, parking lots are used at night, and traffic jams are acceptable.

'As a construction method we experimented with folded plastic. Each piece of the house is cut with a CNC router, scored, folded and welded into shape.
'The plastic, polypropylene, can be folded without losing its strength.
• Goldfish Bob ‘doing swimmingly’ after delicate operation to remove tumour

An ailing goldfish facing near certain death after being struck down by a tumour has made a remarkable recovery - after its owners took it to their local vets.
Bob had been struggling to swim in his tank for a number of weeks after developing a lump on his fin.

And, with most goldfish normally not living much older than 15 years of age, the 20-year-old pet’s chances of survival did not look great.

However, Bob’s owner’s opted to operate on the three-inch fish - who they consider part of the family - after learning of their local vets’ success operating on exotic creatures - including a constipated goldfish.

And, after a delicate operation at Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham lasting just half an hour, he made a full recovery and returned home the same day. Dr Faye Bethell, who used micro-surgical equipment to carry out the procedure, said: “The option was to remove the lump or put him to sleep and now he is doing brilliantly. They (Bob’s owners) were really, really pleased because the goldfish is older than their children and is considered part of the family.”

The operation, which was carried out on a special operating table, involved feeding anaesthetic water into Bob’s mouth through a tube and using a miniature heart-rate monitor to check he was asleep before cutting out the lump using tiny forceps and scissors.

Dr Bethell, a director of the centre, said: “It’s pretty complicated because everything is so small and they don’t have a massive volume of blood so have to make sure they don’t lose too much blood.

“We’ve done several (operations on goldfish) but this one was the oldest fish we’ve operated on. We keep them wet throughout using their own tank water so they don’t dry out.” But she added: “He is back home and enjoying swimming properly. The operation took about half an hour and he was returned to his owners the same day.”

Life On The Edge

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the homeless population of Los Angeles and L.A. County has increased as much as 20% in the last year, and leads the nation in homeless unsheltered living, at nearly 70%.
Homelessness here has grown substantially since the last El Niño, which dumped 30 inches of rain on Los Angeles during the winter of 1997-98, authorities say. Recently, the Los Angeles City Council declared a state of emergency on homelessness and called for $100 million to help address the growing crisis. The Los Angeles River flows through Los Angeles County, from Canoga Park in the western end of the San Fernando Valley, nearly 48 miles southeast to its mouth in Long Beach. Homeless people live along much of its length, with many located generally east of Downtown L.A., making their homes in and around the river, under overpasses or alongside rail lines and industrial wastelands. Those people - many dealing with disability, mental health and criminal justice issues - living in tents, improvised shelters and live-in vehicles, have increased 85% in the same period. Causes include high unemployment, low wages and escalating rents, coupled with gentrification and elimination of SRO hotels and cheap rooms, a last option for many. An estimated 800 people live in LA’s riverbeds and storm drains, which will be deluged with powerful torrents when El Niño storms arrive in early 2016. Although the Sheriff’s Department and LA’s Homeless Services Authority have made numerous visits to warn residents, many see no compelling reason - or options - for moving. Most are not the transient homeless we are used to seeing but have set up semi-permanent living quarters in the LA River, which with its sweeping concrete vistas and city skyline sunsets may soon become both a beautiful and dangerous place to call home.

MSPCA-Angell Rescues Dog Who Chewed Off his Own Foot While Tethered Outside

Organization’s Adoption Center Raising Funds for Surgery While its Law Enforcement Team Pursues Felony Cruelty Conviction

An emaciated two-year-old long-haired German Shepherd is lucky to be alive after chewing his own foot off in a desperate bid to free himself from the tether that was twisted around his leg for days, if not weeks, the MSPCA-Angell announced today.

“Maverick” was seized on July 12 by MSPCA Law Enforcement Officer Chelsea Weiand after the Middleboro, Mass. animal control officer discovered the dog and rushed him to a nearby animal clinic, where he was sedated so veterinarians could clean the severe wound to his right rear foot. Officer Weiand later took Maverick to the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston for ongoing treatment.

Weiand noted that Maverick’s other legs were covered in rope burns and scars that had healed over. “Clearly he had been entangled by his own leash many times in the past; unfortunately he was unable to free himself this last time,” she said. Weiand estimates that Maverick had been tethered and unattended for at least a full day before he injured himself.

On July 19 Weiand charged the dog’s previous owner, Kevin Kennedy of Middleboro, with one count of felony animal cruelty for neglect and failure to pursue necessary veterinary care. Kennedy will be arraigned in Wareham District Court on August 18.

One-of-a-Kind Surgery
An injury such as Maverick’s would typically be addressed by amputating the entire leg. But, according to Dr. Mike Pavletic, head of surgery at Angell, the dog’s hips are also compromised, taking that treatment option off the table. “His pelvic dysplasia has advanced to the stage that he simply wouldn’t be able to walk if we took his leg off,” said Pavletic.
Pavletic will instead deploy a technique he himself developed years ago: he will reconstruct for Maverick a funct
